Raking Leaves makes short films. Each film provides an opportunity for audiences to engage and learn more about an artist's book project.
The film animates the written text by Aisha Khalid in her book project, Name, Class, Subject. In the book project, the text appears in the dog-eared section of the book, hidden from view to be discovered along with all the other 'printer's errors' in her book project. The film animates line upon line of her text, moving through the pages of the book from its Urdu cover to its English cover, taking the viewer on the journey of lines, mistakes and anomalies that quietly describe the effects of a national and alien tongue upon a nation's struggle to define itself.
Side by Side is a fictional documentary that explores Imran Qureshi’s two volume book project of the same title. Narrated by the artist, the film shows a group of school children completing The True Path, an 8-metre long dot-to-dot book, whilst their teacher leafs through a copy of Moderate Enlightenment. The film documents the children’s reactions as they connect the dots, drawing sometimes literal, sometimes vividly imagined conclusions about what the book might or might not mean.
